BEFORE YOU BEGIN

A little knowledge. A better starting point.

Start with two things: the space you have and the materials you want.

Start with the walls, openings and appliances.

Know your space. Understand your cost.

A bigger kitchen usually needs more cabinets and countertop material, so it generally costs more. Layout, storage features and material choices also affect the total.

Bring rough wall measurements and a few photos. Include windows, doors and appliances. We confirm the details during the site visit.

Keep what you like. Change what does not work for you.

Look beyond the colour and price.

What are your current cabinets made of? What do you like about them, and what would you change? Compare the cabinet box, the door material and the surface finish separately.

A painted door can have wood or MDF underneath. A wood-look surface is not always solid wood. Ask what is under the finish.

What is underneath?

Solid wood

Natural timber with its own grain. It can be painted or stained. Ask which cabinet parts are solid wood, because doors and boxes may use different materials.

MDF

Fine wood fibres bonded into a smooth panel. MDF can be shaped, painted or covered with a decorative surface.

Particleboard

Wood particles bonded into a panel. It is often used with a decorative surface; check the panel and the covering separately.

What is on the surface?

Paint or stain

Paint gives a coloured finish; stain lets the wood grain show through. Neither name tells you what the cabinet is made from.

Melamine

A decorative surface fused onto a panel, commonly MDF or particleboard. It is a surface choice, not solid wood.

Thermofoil & plastic coverings

Thermofoil is a plastic film formed over a shaped panel, often MDF. Other plastic laminates are also surface coverings. Ask which covering and core are used.
